Meltway have stopped asking for permission.

Hailing from Esbjerg, Denmark, Meltway have spent the last few years turning shoegaze inside out. What started as an introverted, pedalboard-gazing indie band has evolved into something far more restless: a loud, unpredictable and intensely physical five-piece that collides shoegaze, dream pop, punk, progressive rock, noise and alternative rock into a sound that refuses to sit still.

Their music has always been about contrast. Beautiful melodies buried beneath walls of guitar. Dreamlike passages suddenly giving way to chaos. Introspective lyrics pushed against explosive instrumentation. Catchy hooks fighting their way through distortion, noise and nervous energy.

Or, as Meltway put it themselves: pop songs disguised as something much more dangerous.

The band’s 2024 debut album, Nothing Is Real, established Meltway as one of Denmark’s most intriguing shoegaze acts. Built around layered guitars, driving drums, sharp bass lines and an atmosphere that constantly shifts between euphoria and introspection, the album pushed the band beyond the boundaries of conventional genre labels. Their earlier EP Everytime had already caught the attention of international tastemakers, including KEXP, who praised the band’s combination of fuzzy guitars, atmospheric textures, ethereal vocals and soaring hooks.

Since then, Meltway have become a very different beast on stage.

Their 2024 tour through Germany and Poland brought the band deep into the European underground, with shows across cities including Berlin, Dresden, Bonn, Hannover and Szczecin. The experience of living on the road, playing night after night and meeting audiences who genuinely care about alternative music pushed Meltway‘s songwriting and live performance into new territory.

Now they are ready to take another step.

Their forthcoming EP, By Popular Demand, consists of five songs that, according to the band, nobody actually asked for.

And that’s precisely the point.

By Popular Demand is Meltway without the safety net. Catchy, uncompromising and occasionally completely unhinged, the EP sees the band embracing a more aggressive and unpredictable side of their sound. Shoegaze meets what the band calls dream punk, while progressive structures, alternative rock and flashes of metal create a volatile musical landscape where almost anything can happen.

The first single, “Jumper,” is an upbeat indie-rock rush driven by restless energy. Beneath its infectious surface, the song deals with the feeling of losing yourself inside a relationship – the struggle between being who someone wants you to be and remembering who you actually are.

“Hyper Beam” takes things considerably further. Dreamy art-rock atmospheres collide head-on with furious metal and chaotic rhythms as frontman Mathias tears through his own emotional defences. It is vulnerable, angry and deliberately excessive – eventually exploding into an almost hysterical scream.

On the EP’s finale, “Punkz,” Meltway confront their old ghosts head-on. The song is fast, tense and confrontational, turning the past into something that can finally be challenged rather than simply carried.

At the heart of By Popular Demand is a simple idea: dare to be yourself.

Meltway’s evolution mirrors that idea. The boys who once stood quietly in the corner of the classroom, hiding behind walls of guitar effects, are now stepping into the spotlight and screaming straight back at the world.

The result is a band that sounds increasingly difficult to categorize – and increasingly impossible to ignore.
